Rohan Roy, LPC
I'm Rohan, and I've done a lot of different things in my life, from beekeeping to leading wilderness trips to running a restorative justice program. The through-line in all of it was people, and getting curious about what's really going on for them.

About Rohan
I worked as an outward-bound instructor for most of twenty years, and it was a continuously challenging role that kept leaving me wishing I knew more about how to help people through hard times. That pull toward learning more is what moved me forward, first into a master’s in restorative justice, working with people in the justice system and the school discipline process. My supervisor there was always oriented toward prevention, telling stories about working further up the stream, before people ended up in trouble. I liked the justice work, but I felt the chance to work further upstream, to get at the root of things, and that’s what brought me here.
I came to Fort Lewis for part of my bachelor’s, met my wife here, and built some of my deepest friendships in this community, so the place is home. Outside of therapy, mountain biking and skiing are near the top of the list, and I love working with my hands, including renewable energy work that goes back to growing up off the grid. I’m involved with a few local organizations doing good work here, from Big Brothers Big Sisters to the Fort Lewis College Village Aid Project, and I love traveling and dabbling in other languages, plus time with my wife and our cat.

Rohan’s Approach to Care
I like to think I’m pretty conversational and laid back, just getting to know you as two people building a relationship and some comfort. I’m grounded in a person-centered approach, validating your experience and building trust, and from there we take things where they fit for you. That might be dialectical behavioral therapy and present-focused skills, or trauma processing like EMDR and parts work when we want to understand how you got here. I often describe it as two sides of a coin: we work a little on skills, and we also work on making sense of the story.
I do my best work with anyone ready to give the whole thing a shot, and I especially enjoy people who come in a little cautious or skeptical, thinking, I don’t know, is this even for me? I like helping them answer that question. I’ll also be honest that I might just not be your cup of tea, and that’s fine; fit matters a lot, and there’s no shame in finding it elsewhere.
On EMDR, I think of it as letting your brain do the work it wants to do anyway, but sometimes gets blocked from. Trauma can leave experiences stuck in a part of the brain that keeps you ready to react, which is adaptive when something is truly dangerous and a problem when it isn’t. EMDR gives your brain the space and time to process those experiences, activating both the creative and the logical sides so they integrate. Most of my clients describe it as exhausting, and often they’ll say, I hadn’t thought about it like that, when I haven’t said a word. For couples, I focus on communication, with extra training in nonviolent communication and connecting to needs and values. A lot of conflict comes from couples who share the same values but are prioritizing different ones in the moment, then jumping to competing strategies, and when we get grounded in the shared values first, it opens room to brainstorm without knocking each other’s ideas down.
Rohan’s education and experience
I hold a master’s degree connected to restorative justice work . Before counseling I spent over twenty years leading wilderness trips for people of every age and income, worked as a live-in caretaker for adults with disabilities, taught high school science, started and ran a restorative justice program for schools and the court system, and worked as a farmer, carpenter, waiter, and human resources manager. I speak Spanish conversationally and support multilingual families when it fits. I offer therapy to individuals and families for clients age 12 and up, accept Medicaid, United, and Anthem, or self-pay with a sliding scale, and I specialize in complex trauma and recovery, with added study in autism and ADHD.
