Is online therapy as effective as in person?

The big question

It can be, and the research backs that up. People make real, lasting change through telehealth.

Like a lot of things in this work, it depends. Online therapy gives you direct access to a therapist, room to explore, and skills you can practice between sessions. For some people it is not quite enough on its own. Connection can land differently through a screen, and being in the room together sometimes allows for a fuller felt sense of safety, or the chance to work on interpersonal dynamics in a more natural way.

What surprises people is how much of the work travels well. We can do EMDR by telehealth. Somatic work, art therapy, skills-based work like DBT. Plenty of approaches are just as rich and just as deep virtually. The goal is finding the mode that fits you, and that is worth talking through before you decide.

There are whole pockets of southwest Colorado with no in-person therapist at all, and plenty of people in them who have simply gone without.

There are stretches of Colorado with no therapist in them at all. People live there anyway, and plenty of them have gone years without care.

We work with people all over Colorado, and they’ve got almost nothing in common. Some places out here are too small to keep a practice running. Other folks live where there are therapists on every block and still can’t get an appointment that fits around a shift schedule. And some could drive to an office just fine and would rather not, which they don’t owe anybody an explanation for. None of that is a therapy problem.

It’s an access issue, and access is the thing telehealth is actually good at.
