What shapes mental health in Durango?

The big picture for this small town

Durango is its own culture – really, several at once. There's the recreational, outdoorsy crowd; there's an agricultural community that's worked this land for generations; and there's a deep Native American presence.

All of it mixed into one place. Those groups don’t always need the same things or want the same kind of help, and sometimes people assume there’s only one kind of therapy, or one kind of therapist, and that if they don’t fit a certain mold, therapy isn’t really for them.

We’re here to tell you that, no matter who you are, this therapy is for you.

Everyone’s welcome in therapy, and we’ve built Fireside to prove it. We’re a practice that works for the ranch family and the raft guide and the person who only lives here half the year, without asking any of them to become someone else first. If you’ve felt like the support around here wasn’t built for someone like you, that assumption is the thing we’re trying to put to rest.

Honestly, whichever way you turn, it's not hard to find someone here not getting what they need.

Plenty of people in this region fall through the cracks. Our rural, hardworking, often older neighbors, folks raised on pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps, run into real stigma and real barriers, because that mindset doesn’t leave much room for asking for help. Kids are underserved too; there’s a genuine shortage of resources for them.

What makes us suited to this place is simple: we’ve lived here a long time – many of us for decades. We’re not one cookie-cutter therapist mold repeated. Each individual brings a real life lived in these mountains into the work, so whatever background you come from, we can meet you there without judgment.
