What shapes mental health in Dolores?

Generations in one valley

Montezuma County has services, but they are limited, and in a community this size the closest option is not always the one you want to walk into.

Many of the families here have been in this valley for generations. You grew up alongside your neighbors, your kids go to school with their kids, and the person behind the front desk is usually someone you already know from somewhere else. That closeness is one of the best things about living here, and it is also what can make stepping toward help feel exposed.

Sometimes what stops people is stigma. Just as often it is simpler than that, and it comes down to not feeling like you have the privacy to go looking for support in the first place.

That is why we are opening an office here instead of asking Montezuma County to make the drive. We want a resource staffed by someone who knows Cortez and Dolores and the country around them, and a room that feels welcoming to walk into for whatever you are carrying.

Ask around here and it does not take long to find someone who has been managing on their own for years.

There are services in Montezuma County. There aren’t many of them, and there is not much choice in which one you walk into.

In a small community, people often want to reach help that is not right next door. When the few options nearby are staffed by someone who already knows your name, that is a reasonable thing to want. Right now it usually means a long drive, or it means going without.

The office we are opening is meant to sit inside the community rather than ask the community to leave it. We want it staffed by someone who already knows Cortez and Dolores and the country around them, close enough to actually use and private enough to walk into.
