Therapy for Older Adults
Therapy for older adults across southwest Colorado. For the hardworking, self-reliant folks this region leaves behind.
Some of the most underserved people in this region are the rural, hardworking, often older adults, folks who’ve been in these communities for generations and lived a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps life.
When that’s the mindset you were raised in, there’s still real stigma and real barriers to walking in for help. That doesn’t mean the need isn’t there. It often means it went unmet for a long time.
We have a clinician who grew up in Dolores, in Montezuma County, and is specifically drawn to working with the ranchers and retirees there, because they grew up surrounded by that demographic and see so much of what those folks have been through.
That matters – having a therapist who doesn’t just know the field but knows what it’s like to come up in a place like this.

Plenty of people arrive here at seventy having never once talked to a therapist, and think that's a strike against them. It isn't. Starting late doesn't make the work slower.
- Grief after losing a spouse, a sibling, or lifelong friends
- Depression that arrived slowly enough that it just looks like getting older
- Anxiety about health, money, or independence
- The shift after retirement, or after handing off work you did your whole life
- Isolation through the long winter months, especially living rural
- Old experiences that never got looked at and are still steering things
- Strain with adult children or grandchildren
- Needing somewhere to put it all that isn’t your family

Your Support System
Coming in may run against everything you were raised to do about handling things yourself.
Nobody will ask you to talk differently than you talk. Early sessions are about what’s actually going on and what you’d want different, in plain terms, and after that it gets practical. We work a concrete problem at whatever pace suits you rather than sitting in generalities. What tends to surface is loss, changes in health or role, and a long stretch of years spent getting through things without much room to look at them. You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to be here.
Available in person or by telehealth.

Most of our clinicians have lived in this region a long time, many of them for decades.
That’s not a nice detail, it’s the whole thing. You won’t spend a session explaining what a hard winter does to a person, or what it means to have worked the same ground your whole life. One of our therapists grew up in Dolores and Montezuma County and will tell you straight out that ranchers and retirees are the people they most want to work with, because they were raised around them and have spent years listening to how they think.
Nobody here treats a generation that was taught to handle things quietly as a puzzle to be solved.
